COURSE SUMMARY
PUAFIR306 – Identify, Detect and Monitor Hazardous Materials at an Incident teaches the skills and knowledge required to use specific equipment to detect airborne contaminants, liquids and solids at a hazardous materials incident.
This unit applies to personnel required to detect and identify contaminants at a hazardous materials incident using specialist equipment to identify the materials, assess risks posed by the materials identified and to formulate a plan for their safe isolation and mitigation.
Hazardous materials incident is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving any hazardous material based on physico-chemical, chemical, biological or radiological properties that poses an unreasonable risk to life, property or the environment. This includes dangerous goods, goods too dangerous to be transported and hazardous chemicals.
The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.
PUAFIR306 – Identify, Detect and Monitor Hazardous Materials at an Incident is targeted to those who provide initial response to hazardous materials incidents in the workplace such as those who are working in a mines rescue unit, working as part of an Emergency Response Team or Emergency Service Personnel.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

RECERTIFICATION
Participants are required to re-certify every 12 months from their completion date to maintain currency.
COURSE DELIVERY
This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.
COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
- Face to Face – 15 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
- Refresher training – 6 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS
No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Participants must have sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course. Personal safety equipment must be provided by the student and worn during training
PREREQUISITES
- PUAFIR207 – Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit (Note: this pre-requisite also has a pre-requisite of PUAFIR210 – Prevent Injury)
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.
ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:
- Interpreting hazardous information
Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:
- Simulated scenario for a hazardous atmosphere
- Analyse and communicate detection results
- Don, operate in, decontaminate and remove personal protective clothing and equipment
- Interpret safety and hazard information
- Use detection equipment
Documentation – The student must complete an Incident Report form.
Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
