COURSE SUMMARY
PUAFIR207 – Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit covers the competency required to select, don, operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere.
It includes conducting pre-donning checks and tests of breathing apparatus; donning and checking of breathing apparatus; operating breathing apparatus and concluding breathing apparatus operations.
PUAFIR207 – Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit applies to personnel who work as a member of a team. Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision and instruction.
The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.
PUAFIR207 – Operate Breathing Apparatus Open Circuit has a strong emphasis on emergency procedures and safety; however, this is not the prime focus of the unit. Regular Breathing Apparatus Refresher Training Courses are recommended under Australian Standard 1715-2009.
We specialise in tailoring training scenarios to your workplace needs. Practical exercises will be tailored to your specific workplace and may include a selection of the following: Firefighting, Search & Rescue, Chemical Splash Suits, Fully Encapsulated Suits, Confined Space Rescue & Decontamination etc.
Our Training is conducted by experienced emergency services personnel, who have the knowledge and experience to walk you through the requirements to operate Breathing Apparatus equipment correctly and safely.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

RECERTIFICATION
Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.
COURSE DELIVERY
This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.
COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)
- Face to Face – 20 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
- Refresher training – 15 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS
No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Participants must be physically able to speak clearly and unambiguously in the language of the worksite. Due to the high amount of practical training in this unit, participants must also be physically fit.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.
ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:
- Pre-donning checks, tests procedures and fault reporting
- Concluding operation techniques
Documentation – The student must complete an Equipment Fault Log.
Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenarios:
- Confined space work scenario
- Rescue operation scenario
Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.. The student must complete all assessment questions.
*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
