COURSE SUMMARY

PUAEME001 – Provide Emergency Care will allow you to develop skills and knowledge and most importantly, confidence, to provide emergency care to a casualty pending the arrival of appropriately qualified personnel.  You will develop the skills to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery.  It includes initial intervention in a casualty with a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing CPR while awaiting an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of other less serious conditions, such as applying water for burns or assisting someone who is bleeding.

Providing effective, lifesaving emergency care requires instruction and practical training.  This is especially true where it relates to potentially fatal illnesses and injuries, such as those that require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or involve severe bleeding. These procedures carry a risk of further injury to the casualty.  As with any training, it is more useful if training occurs before being confronted with an actual real-life situation. 

The course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide CPR in the event of an emergency. This unit is not designed for workers whose primary response role is one of emergency care, first aid or pre-hospital care.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

COURSE CONTENT

• Identify need for emergency care
• Ensure personal safety of carer and casualty
• Reassure casualty
• Assess casualty and implement emergency care procedures
• Work cooperatively with personnel from other organisations
• Recover and restore first aid equipment and complete documentation

RECERTIFICATION

There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for this unit, except those that fall in line with industry standards/recommendations.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 18 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Refresher training – 8 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates

WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must be physically able to provide emergency care and first aid where there may be risk to life. Participants must have the physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

• Verbal discussion and incident report
• Bleeding and shock
• Sprains and fractures
• Burns

Documentation – The student must complete an Incident Report form.

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:

• Perform CPR on an adult

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

*Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
