MSMWHS216 – OPERATE BREATHING APPARATUS

COURSE SUMMARY

MSMWHS216 – Operate Breathing Apparatus teaches the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard. This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working:

• In a confined space
• With hazardous gases/vapours
• In an oxygen deficient atmosphere
• In other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus

Trainees will learn how to correctly operate various Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus equipment. There is a high amount of practical training conducted in this unit, so you have the knowledge and skills to safely operate this equipment, including the required skills to safely inspect, maintain and operate SCBA. This unit has a strong emphasis on emergency procedures and safety; however, this is not the prime focus of the unit. Regular Breathing Apparatus Refresher Training Courses are recommended under Australian Standard 1715-2009.

This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

We specialise in tailoring training scenarios to your workplace needs. Practical exercises will be tailored to your specific workplace and may include a selection of the following: Firefighting, Search & Rescue, Chemical Splash Suits, Fully Encapsulated Suits, Confined Space Rescue & Decontamination etc.

Our Training is conducted by experienced emergency services personnel, who have the knowledge and experience to walk you through the requirements to operate Breathing Apparatus equipment correctly and safely.

COURSE CONTENT

• Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
• Operate breathing apparatus
• Conclude operations in accordance with procedures

This course is delivered and assessed on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909 by ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd.

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 2 years from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.

COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 8 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Refresher training – 8 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates

WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must be physically able to speak clearly and unambiguously in the language of the worksite. Due to the high amount of practical training in this unit, participants must also be physically fit.

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE COURSE?

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:

• Demonstrating pre-donning checks, tests procedures and fault reporting
• Completing an equipment fault log
• Demonstrating concluding operation techniques
• Labelling the components of breathing apparatus
• Demonstrating consistency in performance over time in a range of actual or simulated environments

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

 *Please note that ERT Fire & Rescue supplies all equipment necessary for you to undertake your training. ERT Fire & Rescue always recommend and encourage you to bring along your own equipment. Trainee’s must wear appropriate clothing that will get dirty and enclosed footwear is essential.
