HLTAID009 – PROVIDE CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION

COURSE SUMMARY

HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) teaches the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines, including using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.

This course is developed for existing workers in the industry who may require CPR training as recommended by the ARC. 

There are also specific industries that require additional training such as childcare workers, school teachers and other industries.

With urgent medical care to restart the heart, survival is possible. Quick decision making to recognise and assess a cardiac emergency, call for medical assistance and perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures will increase the chance of survival for a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally.

HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) also covers conveying accurate incident details when handing the casualty over to emergency services, how to review an incident, to recognise any psychological impacts on self and other rescuers, to seek help if required and for improvement of own personal skills and response times.

Quick decision making and the correct knowledge on what to do could save someone’s life.

RECERTIFICATION

Participants are required to re-certify every 12 months from their completion date to maintain currency.

COURSE DELIVERY

• This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an ERT Rescue Group Pty Ltd training facility.
• Online learning with face to face assessment

 COURSE DURATION (FACE TO FACE)

• Face to Face – 2 hours (minimum) – full face to face course
• Blended delivery – 1.5 hours (minimum) face to face course – with the addition of 20 minutes self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course
• Refresher training – 1.5 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates
• Online training with face to face assessment – 20 minutes (minimum) face to face assessment with the addition of 1.5 hours of self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course.

WORK PLACEMENT ARRANGEMENTS

No work placement arrangements will be required as part of this course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must be physically able to provide resuscitation and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life. Participants must have the physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks – The assessor must observe the following performance tasks:

• Perform CPR on an infant

Practical scenarios – The assessor must observe the following practical scenario:

• Perform CPR on an adult (including the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
